- Blindness or Low Vision
- Blind, partially sighted, and deafblind
- Have a valid Alberta Personal Health Number (PHN)
- Permanent resident of Alberta (home, supportive living, hospital, long term care)
- Meet clinical eligibility specific to equipment types
What Devices are Covered?
- Consumer Products: low tech and low vision aids, including large print phones, talking calculators, talking blood pressure monitors, braille watches, magnifiers, loupes, monoculars, binoculars and other items
- Assistive Technology: includes CCTV’s, software, GPS, Optical character recognition equipment
- Deafblind Products: includes vibrating watches, large print or braille clocks with vibrators, alerting systems, FM systems, and communication devices
What Services are Available?
- Assessment and authorization process of products
Procedure for Getting Access
- Low Technical Equipment: Approved authorizer assesses the client's need
- Low Vision Aids: Referral from optometrist, ophthalmologist, or general practitioner, and an evaluation by a clinic with a Low Vision Specialist or CNIB clinic
- Assistive Technology: Application form from an Assistive Technology Specialist to be submitted and reviewed by Program Leads
- Deafblind: Application submitted to a Program Lead for review
